Yanks Sweep, Hughes Brilliant, in Demolition of Twinkies

Jeff Bohen-Staff Writer (Game Brief)

The New York Yankees advanced to the ALCS behind a 6-1 win last night over the Twins in the Bronx Saturday night.

A brilliant pitching performance by Phil Hughes, home runs by Marcus Thames and Nick Swisher overwhelmed the Twins in the early innings.

A run-scoring Jorge Posada single to left brought Robinson Cano home with the games first run.

In the third, a Mark Teixeira laser to the left scored Nick Swisher from second, increasing the Yankee lead to 2-0.

Marcus Thames then smashed an opposite field bomb with Cano abroad for his first career post season home run and a 4-0 lead.

The rest of the nights heroics belonged to Hughes.

Retiring 11 of the first 12 batters he faced Hughes said, "I felt like from pitch one I knew I had my good stuff it was just a matter of keeping my emotions in check...and putting zeros up on the board makes the job for our offense a lot easier."

The final pitching line of seven innings no runs, one walk and six strikeouts not allowing a single base runner to advance past second.

Mariano Rivera closed out the win on a fly ball to left.

Its fourth time this decade the Yankees eliminated the Twins in the AL division series.

The Yankees will get the next two days off while they await the outcome of the Rays v Rangers series, that Texas now leads two games to one.

Game four is Sunday at 1 p.m. in Arlington.

The ALCS will start Friday night in either Texas or St.Petersburg.
